Detailed program

Day 1: Arrival
Arrival at the Kuusamo airport and 1 hour transfer to Hossa where you check-in in your cabin located just outside Hossa national park. Dinner and briefing about week’s program.

Day 2: Canyon Lake and rock paintings, walking 7 km
The week starts with a visit to Julma-Ölkky canyon lake where we will do a half an hour boat trip to look at the cliffs. Then we will hike 4 km to see the Värikallio Cliffs with ancient, shamanistic rock paintings dating back 4000 years. The rock paintings are the largest prehistoric paintings in Finland. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed around an open fire and after that we will hike a few kilometres through the beautiful pine and spruce forest back to our accommodation.

Day 3: Reindeer farm, walking 4 km
Today we visit a reindeer farm located in Hossa village. We walk along the ridges and on the lake shores to the farm where we meet the semi-wild animals inhabiting northern Finland. We can try our skills at lassoing, pet and feed reindeer and learn about the reindeer husbandry today. Lunch will be taken at the farm before we walk back to our accommodation. In the evening, like any other evening as well, you can relax in sauna available in the area.

Day 4: Day at leisure
This day is for optional activities. There are numerous hiking trails in Hossa to explore on your own or you can rent rowing boats, canoes or fatbikes. The blueberry season is at its best in August, why not to pick some berries in the surrounding forests. Many lakes in the area have sandy shores which are good swimming spots and crystal-clear water is ideal for fishing.

Day 5: Canoeing
For a change from walking, we take canoes onto the lakes and rivers close to our accommodation. We will use open Indian canoes. All necessary equipment, such as paddles and life vests will be provided. The tour will be on still calm waters. During the excursion we will have picnic around an open fire on one of the many beautiful campfire places on the area.

Day 6: Border and bears
Today we head south-east towards the Russian border to Arola farm owned by Seppänen family. The remote woodland around Arola is inhabited by European brown bears and family has built several log hides from where it is possible to observe and photograph those majestic animals. In the afternoon it is possible to join a 6 hour bear watching excursion, highly recommended, but not suitable for the youngest in the family (min. age 5 years). Arola is also well-known for its tasty local food and you will enjoy a delicious lunch made with the fruits of the forest and freshest local ingredients.

Day 7: Return
Breakfast, check-out and transfer to Kuusamo airport.
