Reindeer are a common sight in the area and during skiing we may spot them as well as their tracks.
It is said that there’s nothing more Finnish than sauna and at night we can relax in the steaming hot, traditional lakeside sauna and dip in icy water. Believe it or not, not only sauna, but the ice-swimming as well leaves you feeling fantastic and refreshed. Don’t miss the experience!
Day 3: Fatbiking
Cycling in the snow may sound weird and exhausting but today you will find out how fun and easy it can be! Fatbikes are the new fascinating way to explore snowy forests. These easy-to-ride mountain bikes with oversized tyres move on snowy tracks with ease and wide tyres offer a great grip. You will first get used to bikes cycling on the road and then head off-road along snowy trails.
Day 4: Snowshoeing
Today you set off on an overnight snowshoeing tour to the wilderness hut. You follow a trail through beautiful snow covered pine, spruce and birch forest and halfway you will stop for a picnic lunch around an open fire. Before dusk you will arrive at Huosiusjärvi and Iikoski wilderness cabins where you spend the night. There’s no electricity in the cabins but they are heated by a wood-burning stoves. The candle light will guarantee a nice atmposhere. In the evening it is again nice to warm up in the lakeside sauna.
Day 5: Snowshoeing
After breakfast you will go on snowshoeing along the ridges and on the lakes. The surrounding forests are home to many animals such as elks, wolves, lynxes and hares but unfortunately they are seldom seen. Bears also inhabit the area but will be hibernating. The lunch will be taken again outdoors around an fire and your snowshoeing excursion will be completed on arrival at the basecamp Jatkonsalmi.
Day 6: Reindeer farm and igloo building.
This morning you will visit a nearby reindeer farm where you will learn about the reindeer husbandry in Finland and have a chance for a short reindeer sledge ride. Afterwards, you will have lunch at the farm.
The afternoon is for igloo building. By shovels and spades you make a big pile of snow which will be hollowed out afterwards. If you want, you can also sleep in the igloo. Wrapped in warm sleeping bags on thick mattresses you stay warm in your cool “hotel”, no matter how freezing it is outside.
